Lawrence History Center Hosts 47th Annual Meeting; Welcomes Three New Board Members; Features Keynote on the 1913 Lawrence Bathhouse Tragedy
Lawrence, MA – On Saturday, September 13, 2025, Lawrence History Center (LHC) held its 47th Annual Meeting and Open House in hybrid format (in person and on Zoom). Board President Sara Morin presided over the meeting, during which board member Mary Guerrero was appointed 2nd Vice President, Mike Morris, Jr. and Jineyda Tapia renewed their three-year terms, and three new members — Peter Rayno, Richard Robichaud, and Nicole Sabando — were elected by the membership to their first three-year terms.
The event, marking 47 years since LHC’s founding, took place in the historic Essex Company Stable, part of the Essex Company Office & Yard, a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Before the business meeting began, Executive Director Susan Grabski shared the sad news of the passing of Kathleen S. Flynn (pictured at left), a beloved colleague and friend, on August 23, 2025. Flynn contributed to the organization across five decades. The board is considering ways to honor her legacy, including naming her Researcher Emeritus and establishing a research fellowship in her name. A moment of silence was observed in her memory.
Sara Morin called the meeting to order at 10:04 AM. She welcomed guests and thanked LHC board, staff, and volunteers for their efforts across the last year. She then presented the LHC Annual Meeting Minutes, 9/28/2024 for approval.
After the LHC Annual Meeting Minutes, 9/28/2024, were accepted; LHC Board Treasurer Mark Svendsen, presented the Fy2025 Treasurer's Report for acceptance. His overview included a summary of our revenue and other support, in addition to our expenses and investment account balance.

Peter Rayno, 2025-2028 (1st Term) Peter is an Executive Vice President at Enterprise Bank (now Rockland Trust), serving as the Community Banking and Lending Director for the State of New Hampshire and Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts. He is responsible for leading a team of 25 commercial lending professionals throughout his area, serving small to mid-size businesses as well as not-for-profit organizations and municipalities. He joined Enterprise Bank in 2004 and, prior to his position with the Bank, he held various positions at Citizens Bank (formerly known as First NH Bank and Amoskaeg Bank) over 15 years. In 2018, Peter was named Community Banker of the Year by the New Hampshire Bankers Association. Peter is a graduate of Assumption University and holds an MBA with a finance concentration from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is also a graduate of the Wharton School Executive Development Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Richard Robichaud, 2025-2028 (1st Term) I am a proud native of Lawrence that has spent my entire career trying to improve the quality of life for residents of Greater Lawrence through my work at the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc. (as Chief Financial Officer). Lawrence has a rich history that needs to be preserved, celebrated and communicated. I am always amazed at the reaction I get when I tell people about Lawrence’s rich history. They had no idea it was the birthplace of the modern labor movement and the home of so many people that contributed to the arts, literature, entertainment and politics. I want to do my part to preserve and celebrate this history. |

Nicole Sabando, 2025-2028 (1st Term) Nicole was born in Lawrence and lived in the city until moving to neighboring Haverhill where she continues to reside. While Haverhill has been her place of residence for the majority of her life, Lawrence always felt more like “home” for numerous reasons. Having been raised by immigrant parents— her father from Guayaquil, Ecuador and mother from Santa Maria, Açores, Portugal— the culture and place of the Merrimack Valley is intrinsic to her understanding of identity and community. Nicole, a first-generation college student, received her Associate’s degree in Journalism/Communications from Northern Essex Community College in 2022 and a B.A. in English and Professional Writing from UMass Lowell in 2023. UML brought her to the Lawrence History Center through an internship she did not want to leave once the semester ended (so she stayed for the summer, too). Having always been passionate about storytelling and interested in language and communication, Nicole now works in marketing as a social media manager and marketing communication specialist at Northern Essex Community College. |
After the Board Slate's acceptance by the membership, Andy also thanked outgoing board members Glennys Sanchez and Christian Nunez for their service to the board. Both will be sent a gift from the board.
