"Norcross and Currier were probably Lawrence's first photographers, maintaining a daguerrian studio at No. 2 Merchant's Row on Essex St. in 1846. With few exceptions, photographers were located on Essex St. in the 19th century. Martin W. Mealey ran this studio at 411 Essex St. in 1871, selling picture frames and bird cages too. Small, framed portrait photographs are shown on the outside wall. Mealey departed for Colorado in 1881. Later, this became the location of Little Town Toggery."
