"Lawrence Fishway, October 16, 1919. Copper water-stop between Sections 4 and 5 (south end). Note the copper is bent to lie for two inches of its width in the plane of the contraction joint thus avoiding the possibility of its tearing when the joint may be open because of contraction due to cold weather. It was impossible to bend the copper in two planes. An attempt to do so resulted in the tearing of the copper necessitating a number of soldered joints. This work was done in place by metal workers."
