Description is typed on an accompanying document. "Photos of bed of Merrimack River in vicinity of Central Bridge taken September 9, 1917, showing accumulation of material excavated for pier foundations, which was all left in the river with no attempt at removal. Also shows the general bed of the river. Shows bascule pier on left and group of piles and material from excavation left in the bed of the river." Mills are visible in the background. There are five men, all wearing hats, standing on the bridge (one of them is to the far right).
