A decorated ceramic and metal beer stein . The container is ceramic and decorated with vines, flowers, and a drinking king seated astride some wording. The words, printed in an oval, read : COMPLIMENTS OF BOEHM'S CAFE ADOLPH G. BOEHM 78 - 84 ESSEX ST. LAWRENCE, MASS. DELMONICO OF LAWRENCE. In a smaller oval it reads : HOPFEN U. MATZ, GOTT ER HALT'S. The other oval reads : GERSTE U. HOPFEN, GIBT WUN: CLERTOP FEN. In small lettering near the rim of the stein is printed : 1/2 L. The lid on the stein is metal with a curved handle to open the lid. The bottom of the stein reads : GERMANY. Adolph Boehm was an importer and a bottler. He sold Rhine wines, liquor, ale, porter, lager, and beer and was an agent for Anheuser Hinckel and Cold Spring lager. The cafe was located at 78, 82, and 84 Essex Street, Lawrence, Mass. An advertisement in the Lawrence directory of 1914 lists Matthes and Boehm as proprietors. The donor of the item is Elizabeth Beland.
