A round, pale green , glass bottle with no lid, cap or stopper. There are three labels on the bottle and a plastic sheet has been wrapped around the bottle to keep the labels intact. The narrow label around the neck reads : NATURALLY AGED - BREWERY BOTTLED. In the center is an image of a shield with a lion and two swords. The larger label reads: DIAMOND SPRING ALE DIAMOND SPRING BREWERY - THE MARK OF A FINE BREW. A shield with a lion and two swords is also on this label. In addition there is a small blue label that reads : BEER ANY PERSON WHO SHALL MAKE, FORGE OR ??? ANY LIKE STAMPS SHALL BE GUILTY OF A FELONY AND SUBJECT TO THE SAME PENALTIES AS PROVIDED FOR COUNTERFEITING OF PUBLIC ??? - STATE OF MASS. - EXCISE ??? - GOOD FOR ONE PINT. The markings on the bottom of the bottle are 3-3- 12. Diamond Spring Brewery was located on Common Street from 1856 to 1972. In addition to liquor sales they also added a grocery store. They brewed Holihan brand beverages. Peter and Patrick Holihan were the proprietors. The donor is David Burke of Lawrence, MA.
