Title
Plans and Drawings of Canals
Sub-series contains architectural drawings and plans related to the North and South Canals in Lawrence. The canals were built by the Essex Company and served as the principal source of water power for the mills and other businesses constructed along the canals. The materials present include contours, sections and soundings, construction and excavation details, and plans for head gates and locks for both canals. Most of the materials relate to the North Canal, as it was the first built and longest of the two. Renderings date from the original conception in 1845 and date through 1946. The majority of the dated materials span 1845-1920.
notes: It should be noted that approximately 25% of the materials in this sub-series are undated.
