Exhibit Materials

When the Lawrence General Hospital was established in 1882, the Ladies Charitable Union saw the need for a source for nurses. It made arrangements to give a two year course to women wishing to become professional nurses The most desirable age was between twenty and thirty-five years of age and to be of sound health. They were accepted pending completion of a one month probation. During that month they were boarded and lodged at the hospital but received no compensation unless accepted into the program. After acceptance, they would reside in the hospital, and serve for the fist year as assistant nurses in the wards. The second year they performed any duty assigned to them by the Superintendent, either to act as hospital nurses or to be sent to private nursing calls among the rich and the poor.

This is the collection of images, posters, panels and text created for an exhibit of the Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing.

admin: This exhibit was a joint venture between the Lawrence History Center and the Alumnae Association of the Nurses' Training School of the Lawrence General Hospital.
