Sub-series contains annual day books or diaries kept by principal engineers and superintendents of the Essex Company. Included are 16 volumes recorded by the superintendent (probably Calvin J. Penney) between 1923 and 1942 (Penney died in 1942). Of primary importance in this sub-series is a collection of diaries kept by the Chief Engineer of the Essex Company between 1897 and 1955. The diaries of 1897-1929 are those of Richard A. Hale, and ones from 1930-1955 are those of James R. Baldwin. The content of the engineer's diaries show daily events and conditions related to the operation of the Essex Company's business.
