Mortgages
Sub-series contains records related to mortgages for land sold by the Essex Company. The Essex Company held notes for much of the land it sold. Included are Monthly Land Notes records (1855-1960), Land Note envelopes (1896-1970), three bound volumes titled "Land Notes" (1847-1867), one bound volume titled "Mortgages Foreclosed" (1850-1955), one bound volume titled "Mortgages Discharged" (1846-1959), and a bound volume titled General Index to Mortgages Discharged". Also included are loose instruments of foreclosure from 1850-1945, Partial Releases of Mortgage (1896-1921), and two card files containing an index of mortgages held by the Essex Company. Records typically contain name of mortgagee, amount of note, date and duration of note, and description of property on which lien is effected.

Note: Documents expressing the conveyance of property upon condition, such as that money will be paid or a duty will be performed, which operates as a lien, so that the issuer may, under certain conditions, take possession and foreclose the property upon default.

Essex Company Collection
Loose documents are legal-sized, or folded to accommodate legal-sized enclosures. One leather bound volume is 9" x 11." Two other leather bound volumes are 11" x 16." Card files are kept in 6" x 14" metal cabinets.
