Travelers Club of Greater Lawrence ( Massachusetts) Records
The Travellers' Club of Lawrence held its first meeting on December 28, 1897 at Ida Merill Norwood's home, 15 Albion Street, Lawrence, MA. The final meeting was held May 11,2006. The first By-Laws and Regulations were adopted in 1898. The original eight charter members were: Miss Agnes Stuart, Miss Mary Barlow, Miss Mary Atkinson, Miss Ida Merrill, Mrs. Harry Musk, Mrs. Herbert Horne, Mrs. George Ketchum, and Mrs. Hugo Beil. They met socially at first and then " decided they wanted something more worthwhile. They heard of a Travel Club that seemed to meet their needs and decided to form a club, to learn about the world....all the members were very serious about wanting to learn and better themselves."
The collection includes: Record books from 1990- 2006; By-Laws and Regulations; Program booklets with names and addresses of members; President's papers; Anniversary papers; photographs and a gavel.
notes: Traveler's Club is spelled with one "l" as well as with two "l"s ( Travellers'; Travelers')
admin: The records were created and donated by Elinor Olney, former officer of the club. September 2005, the club began discussions of disbanding and donating the records to the Lawrence History Center. The final meeting was held on May 11, 2006 after 109 years of existence. The remaining members were Peg Currier, Elaine Brough, Patricia Edmonds, Darcy Kirk, Marion Hyde, Alita Keough, Helen Kellner, Mary Sherman, Elinor Olney. Records and pictures were donated to the LHC on September 21, 2006. Earlier records were donated to the Lawrence History Center after the 100th anniversary of the club.
