admin: The Lawrence YWCA was founded in 1892 by twenty two Protestant women from Lawrence and surrounding towns. Working from rented rooms in the Bay State Building on Essex Street, they began to offer classes in current events, the Bible,needlework, and cooking. They also provided hot food and an employment bureau for the young women of the city. In 1899 the YWCA was incorporated and in 1906 it became a charter member of the national organization. In 1910 the Lawrence chapter was one of the first in the US to create an International Institute to serve the immigrant women brought to Lawrence by the textile mills...
