Apart of a series of photos from the Asia in Lawrence Exhibit from 1996, curated by Janet H. Howell, and photographed by Loel A. Poor, this image shows the Eh Say/ Soe Family.The Eh Say/ Soe Family immigrated from Burma (Myanmar). Standing behind his parents is Benedict Bright Soe. His father, U Than Soe, and his mother Jean Eh Soy sit in front of him. Under the photo of the family is a statement from Jean Eh Soy, she said, "When we were in the university, the final year, we had a very big student strike. And at that time my husband was, you know, in jail. He was punished for three years. When he came out and everything was clear and he is knowing that he is not really a politician, so they released him and then, we are good citizens, you know. I mean in our country. So we left the country. When I was in Thailand my husband changed his job. He went to the refugee camp and applied for a job as a ESL teacher." Jean Eh say and her husband lived and worked in the refugee camp for five years, working with special needs children, before moving to Lawrence.
