Samuel A. Green's "An Historical Sketch of Groton, Massachusetts. 1655-1890", was written in the memory of George Dexter Brigham (Town Clerk, 1855-1893). On the dedication page Green describes Brigham: "A life-long friend and neighbor in my native town, who often gave most cheerful help in my local investigations." In the preface that follows, Green provides a short narrative describing the publication of the book. This book was originally written for "History of Middlesex County" which was published in Philadelphia four years prior, and was intended to be written, "merely as a sketch of the town." The author also notes that all but one biography at the end of the book was not written by the author but by Luther Blood. It is important to note information from the author in the preface: "In justice to the writer this statement seems to be necessary, as the annals of Groton, so rich in material, and covering so long a period of time, are here treated in a very scanty way. Through some misunderstanding the work was not divided into Chapters, as had been the intention of the author, who had no opportunity to see the revised proofs."
This book features information on several members of the Lawrence family, for whom the City of Lawrence, MA was named.
