The Britannica describes the Palmer Raids as an undertaking of the United States Department of Justice in 1919 and 1920 in an attempt to arrest foreign anarchists, terrorists, and radical leftists; many of whom were deported. The raids were fueled by social unrest after World War I and were led by Attorney General Richard A. Palmer. and are regarded as the climax of that era's so-called 'Red Scare'.

The donor, Jonas Stundzia, included a note (which was removed) on page 61 which reads. "After the Palmer Raids of 1919, M. Stakionis (Stonie) put the community material in the middle with the science book in the front and had it bound to hide the political material.
