This book contains the transcript of the United States Congressional hearings into the mill worker conditions and strike in Lawrence Massachusetts. The book is the full documentation of the investigation, as issued by Charles Nagel, secretary to Honorable James S. Sherman, President of the Senate, Washington, D.C. The investigation was carried out under the direction of Fred . Croxton, who was personally in charge of the field work and who prepared most of the text in the book. Charles P. Neill, Commissioner - The Secretary of Commerce and Labor, Washington, D.C.. transmitted the text of the book.
The introduction to the transcripts contains the background leading up to the strike - reduction in worker hours, effective reduction in weekly salary, mill owners not taking that many workers did not speak English so were unable to understand these announcements, the demands of the strike committee, acknowledgement that these conditions were not exclusive to Lawrence but could affect any mill in any city, comparison of housing dwellings and rents across several mill cities, population statistics from the 1910 census. Chapter I describes the scope of the strike, The remainder of the book contains statistical tables and comparisons.
