Contains portraits and biographical sketches of prominent citizens of Lawrence and Essex County. Includes views of the leading manufacturing industries of the city, and photographic views of many areas of Lawrence and surrounding areas.
A presentation of a few of the principal incidents in the history of Lawrence. Mention is made of the principal industries that made Lawrence become what it was. There are photographs of principal buildings and beauty spots of the city. Also included are sketches of some of the men who helped in the development of Lawrence.
Lawrence has an area of 4500 acres, about equally divided by the Merrimack river. The portion of the city located north of the river was taken from Methuen, that on the south side of the river was taken from Andover. The book describes the use of steam and water power to drive the machines of the mills. The history of development in the city is described, as well as the breakdown of residents by ethnic origin in 1848. The names and products of each mill is identified. The final section of the book contains advertisements for local businesses.
