Title
Cooking on A Ration
Subtitle
Food Is Still Fun
This is a cookbook from 1943 designed to help in the creation of nutritious meals while also keeping up with ration regulations during wartime. The book is very straightforward about the hardship of the American consumer during WWII and makes it clear that these recipes are valid during wartime, and perhaps 2 or 3 years following the war, but they will not be staples of American cuisine going forward. This book is advertised simply as a way to cope with food shortage and rationing, maintaining a balanced diet in the family while still adhering to government ration laws and doing ones best to prevent unnecessary waste. Recipes for meatless dishes, soups, salads and other simple but filling meals fill the pages of this book, and though it may not have been the intention of the author, or the authors of the many books like this one, a good chunk of those recipes became commonplace in America after the war, and many still prevail today.
