World War II and The Way We Cooked
This is a cookbook for recipes that were used during wartime in the U.S. during the 1940’s following Americas involvement in WWII. Due to the need for military rations, citizens on the Homefront in the U.S. were required to get creative with how they cooked and what they ate, as everything from sugar and margarine to apples and bread were heavily rationed and portioned out to citizens in order to feed the soldiers as well as the mainland without falling into food shortage. Many of the recipes that were created to save certain food items and reduce waste are still used today despite what is now a relative surplus of the same food items that were scarce during WWII. As the cookbook explains in several passages between the listed recipes, this era in home-cooking was integral to creating the food culture that many in America still live by today, and many of the dishes in this book are now American dinner table staples.
