Summary: The narrator is Head of School at Esperanza Academy, a school for economically disadvantaged girls from grades five through eight, who live in Lawrence. It is housed in a builing belonging to Grace Episcopal Church. School goes eleven hours a day, eleven months of the year. The school has many volunteers, including parents who must commit to volunteering two hours a week. The girls are fed three meals a day, plus a snack.
