Summary: The narrator tells his childhood memories of deprivation in communist Cuba. He left in 1969, 10 years after the Revolution. The family was able to leave for Mexico by creating a non-existant child on paper, with whom they could be reunited. He describes a negative attitude from others who learned the family would be leaving Cuba. His father paid to be smuggled to the United States. The narrator describes his many jobs before being ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1996. He has been at St. Mary of the Assumption Church for twelve years and is now the pastor.
