Summary: The narrator begins with the Flood of 1936 and watching the rising river. He tells of the excitement of his friends, who used the river as a playground, but there were problems for the adults whose homes were damaged and whose jobs were suspended when the mills were forced to close. He describes the development of the Union Social Club, which started in 1938 and disbanded in the late 1950's. He describes the LOWER END, populated primarily by Sicilian Italians.
