A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A description of the mill workers in Lawrence, Lowell, Manchester (NH) and Nashua (NH). He describes the European areas people emigrated to, how ethnic differences initially affected the cooperation of workers to unionize, the strength of southern and eastern Europeans in the formation of unions in Lawrence. This book, part one of the thesis covers the early days of the 4 mill cities, Bread and Roses leading to 'a larger battle'. The story continues in the second book - Part 2 of the theses - and covers the 'Indian Summer' of an Industry through 1922.
