Accession No.

This scrapbook holds narratives and photographs of the first electric cars used for transportation in the Greater Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill area. In the beginning narrative it describes how these cars are contructed and the impact this new mode of transportation will have on Lowell and all the surrounding towns. After the formation of this original line called the Lowell & Suburban St. Rwy came a new line called the Lowell, Lawrence & Haverhill Street Railway established 4/29/1892. This company was later formed with the Lynn & Boston Railroad Company. Some of the photographs to be found in the scrapbook include Central Street at Hurd Street with the Hamilton Mill in the background; Boston & Maine RR Station on Central Street; A string of Boston & Northern Street Railway open cars with the usual destinations to Hampton or Revere Beaches. Some of these cars were built by the St. Louis Car Company in 1902 and purchased around 1912 and the Laconia Car Co. began deliveries early 1917 and 1918. By 1935, the days of the electric transport were numbered in Lowell as retirement of these cars slowly began in 1932.
