This book describes the life of Julia Ward Howe, a prominent abolitionist, social activist, and poet. She describes her upbringing in New York City, the different subjects she enjoyed studying, her tour of Europe, the development of her anti-slavery sentiments, and the friends who have been dear to her throughout her lifetime. Within the book, there are images of herself and members of her family. Perhaps most importantly, she is known for being the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. There is a facsimile of the text in this book, appearing as it did in 1861 when it was written.
UPDATE: In January 2016, the Collections Committee decided that this book is never to be de-accessioned or removed from the collection due to its rarity and value.
