Postcard featuring the Great Stone Dam, Lawrence, MA. The granite dam across the Merrimack River, designed by Charles Storrow and constructed by Charles Bigelow, was erected by the Essex Company between 1845 and 1848 to provide water power for the textile industry. It has been the site of the hydroelectric power plant since 1981.
