Title
The Plantation Negro as a Freeman
Subtitle
Observations on His Character, Condition, and Prospects in Virginia
A late nineteenth century study focusing on the lives and culture of southern black communities in America. Spanning the time since their emancipation in 1865, the author comments on numerous topics concerning freed slaves including their morality, marriage, religion, and education. A blatant cultural bias and condescending perspective from the author is prevalent throughout, reflective of the period.
