Full title of the book is "Pictures from Prison Life: An Historical Sketch of the Massachusetts State Prison with Narratives and Incidents and Suggestions on Discipline." The book is written by the then warden Gideon Haynes and chronicles the history of the state prison at Charlestown, the inmates and concludes with a chapter on prison discipline. An appendix lists the wardens, chaplains, inspectors, physicians and clerks from the prison's opening in 1804 to 1868. Also included in the appendix are statistics on the prisoners; e.g., how many were pardoned, killed by other prisoners, average time served. etc. 290 pages. Stamp inside back cover indicates it was purchased from Wm. A Johnson Second-hand Books.
