A Sacred Space -

The recent Lawrence History Center publication, A Sacred Space, the history of the two of the Lawrence Catholic cemeteries, St. Mary - Immaculate Conception Cemeteries and Chapel Mausoleum was released to the public at an event on Thursday, Oct 28 at 1:00 at the Mausoleum.

The book, A Sacred Space, printed in color with many photographic views of the cemeteries, was funded by the McCarthy Memorial Trust Fund and written and photographed by Kathleen Flynn and produced by the Lawrence History Center.

Jim and Janice Jacobs, members of the Cemetery Board, LHC, several members of the funeral home community and members of the public were present to hear Kathy Flynn speak about her research into this significant piece of the Lawrence story.

Kathy Flynn of the Lawrence History Center researched the history of the cemetery, the Catholic community and various clerical communities. Highlighted in the book are significant structures found throughout the cemeteries; identification of the various designs found on the markers and an identification of significant Lawrence historical events as told through the cemetery sections. and certain historical personalities are the perspective the research, took all the photographs and wrote the book.

The book:
*Explores the development of the Catholic community in Lawrence;
*Provides information about the lives of many of those who are buries in the cemeteries and their contribution to the Catholic community and broader community of a Lawrence;
*Identifies the meanings behind many of the engravings and designs found among the markers;
*Includes a fold-out map that helps guide users in locating some of the many significant points of interest;
*Showcases the lovely setting of these urban resting places throughout the seasons with numerous color photographs.
