Summer Camp and Frederick Douglass' 4th July Speech

Summer Camp - Lawrence Community Day Public Charter School Final Day of Camp - July 24, 2009 View students giving final presentation - "Essex Street Then and Now" Summer Camp Staff and Students on final day at Lawrence Heritage State Park Students researched through atlases, city directories , photographs and postcards and Essex Company documents ... If you look up when you are walking on Essex Street, you can appreciate the architecture of the early Essex Street buildings... Looking at the building names, the students researched to see who the structures were named after... The presentation was a 21st century presentation, complete with the up-to-date Google Earth map of Essex Street Lawrence today. Families and faculty came to the Park to celebrate this historical research... When you view the Charter School website, if you click on the red dots on the images and then click again - the complete history of owners and tenants will be revealed... Next summer 2010, the Charter School and the History Center hope to document other sites on Essex Street. You will be able to visit the website of the Charter School to view the slide show they created - complete with images from then and now. The students look forward to interaction from the public to help fill in some of the gaps. *************************************** History is What You Are Doing Now - the LHC Summer Camp kicked off its 2009 season with the students reciting Frederick Douglas' famous 4th of July Speech which he gave in 1852. The students will take turns reading the famous "1852 Independence Day" speech given by abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Later on, Mr. Douglass gave a lecture in Lawrence. The students' recitation took place in the LHC courtyard on July 6,2009 - commemorating both the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln and the election of America's first African American president.
