Boston Visitors to Lawrence!

First Lady Obama and ALERTA!
A summer camp for children, ALERTA! from U Mass Boston, came to visit the Lawrence History Center and the Lawrence Heritage State Park. Fifty-five students with 13 teachers arrived on July 10 in two yellow school buses.

The theme for this summer's 5th grade camp was immigration and Lawrence is known as the Immigrant City!

The students had been studying immigration - they knew about "push and pull,"reasons for immigrating, naturalization, green cards and much, much more.

They were interested, engaged and very well prepared.

A plus for the day was that the History Is What You Are Doing Now Summer Camp was also in session - so the Lawrence students had the opportunity to share information ~ and more importantly~ be proud of the fact that visitors came to their City!

Ably assisted by Patricia Jaysane, Kathy Flynn, Amita Kiley, Al Koch and Danny Gottfried,

the students explored the history of the City, the Essex Company

complex, walked along the canals past the brand new USCIS Immigration Center and explored the exhibits at the Heritage Park.

The weather was perfect and the students were terrific. We hope to see them again next summer.
