Who Worked for the WPA?

Eligible WPA workers were:

*eighteen years or older
* heads of household or primary breadwinners
*US citizens or permanent residents
*unemployed and deemed “needy” by a local relief agency.

Local relief agencies kept lists of eligible workers.
The WPA Division of Employment used this list to assign workers to projects.
Workers were employed for eighteen months, but could reapply, and wages remained relatively low to encourage job seeking in the private sector.
About 15% of WPA workers were women.
