In early spring 2013, the Lawrence History Center began plans to improve accessibility to our main building in the former Essex Company Compound at 6 Essex Street, Lawrence. In so doing, we also hoped to create planting beds to beautify and make the courtyard more welcoming for visitors.

The LHC Facilities Committee, Chaired by LHC board member Karen Herman, and LHC director Susan Grabski began meeting with architect Marie Sorensen of Lawrence based Sorensen Partners | Architects + Planners. Marie shared her expertise with us as we explored options for our project and we soon contracted with her practice to provide concept design, construction documentation drawings, and construction administration services. They assisted us with the Bidding Phase so that we could find a contractor to carry out the work outlined in the construction documents. We received several bids and ultimately signed with Lawrence based Tompkins Corporation.

The project was completed in late fall 2013, right on schedule. Thanks to the experience, vision, and competence of Sorensen Partners | Architects + Planners, and the skillful execution of the Tompkins Corporation, our walkway project is complete and looks fantastic! We made the decision to hold off on the planting the beds until springtime 2014, but could not be happier with the final product!
