How Did the WPA Work?

City and state governments proposed projects, which were selected by the state’s WPA administrator and overseen locally.

Most projects were relatively small-scale, under $25,000 – roughly $400,000 in today’s currency.

City governments covered most of the material and equipment costs, while the WPA paid all wages.

Cities were encouraged to create a list of approved projects that could begin immediately as funding became available.
